West African Drum & Dance in Long Beach

by :

Dance to the beat of the Djembe and DounDouns every Saturday, at the West African Drum and Dance classes at Homeland Cultural Center in Long Beach, CA. Men, women and children of all ages are invited and encouraged to join the dance classes led by master teacher and dancer Ndella Davis-Diassy.

Ndella highlights traditional West African dances and rhythms from a variety of regions and tribes including Guinea and Senegal. From low-impact movements to high-impact jumps, leaps, turns and kicks, the excitement and joy of West African dance will keep you coming back every week. Comfortable, loose clothing.

African drumming is led by long-time drummer Ya-Yah, and offers traditional rhythms with various drums. Students are asked to bring their own drums, but there are some available for in-class practice.  Donations for the drum and dance classes are accepted in lieu of a fee. For those looking to purchase African jewelry, cowrie shell belts, wellness products, CD’s and African clothing,  there is a small marketplace inside of the class. Class Schedule:

12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Intermediate Drum Class

  1. I’m a 66-year old Irish woman who loves African rhythm, drums & dance. I would love to take dance classes for exercise. Do you have appropriate classes? Thanks!
